What is Power Converter?
Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or converted. It measures how quickly work is done or energy is used.
Understanding the Units
Watt (W)
SI unit of power. One watt equals one joule per second.
Common Uses: Light bulbs, appliances, electronics
Kilowatt (kW)
Equal to 1,000 watts.
Common Uses: Electric motors, heating systems, solar panels
Conversion: 1 kW = 1,000 W
Horsepower (hp)
Traditional unit for engine power.
Common Uses: Car engines, motors
Conversion: 1 hp = 745.7 W
Common Conversions
- LED bulb: 10 W
- Microwave: 1,000 W = 1 kW
- Car engine: 150 hp = 112 kW
- Home solar system: 5 kW
- Large wind turbine: 2–3 MW = 2,000–3,000 kW
Conversion Formulas
- Watts to kilowatts: kW = W ÷ 1,000
- Kilowatts to watts: W = kW × 1,000
- Horsepower to watts: W = hp × 745.7
- Watts to horsepower: hp = W ÷ 745.7
- Power formula: P = V × I (Power = Voltage × Current)
Practical Examples
LED bulb: 10 W replaces a 60 W incandescent (same brightness)
Electric kettle: 2,000 W = 2 kW = 2.68 hp
Family car engine: 100 kW = 134 hp = 100,000 W
Home EV charger (Level 2): 7.2 kW = 7,200 W
