What is Electrical Charge Converter?
Electrical charge is a physical property of matter that causes it to experience a force in an electromagnetic field.
Understanding the Units
Coulomb (C)
SI unit of electric charge.
Common Uses: Physics, electrical engineering
Ampere-hour (Ah)
Charge transferred by 1 ampere in 1 hour.
Common Uses: Battery capacity
Conversion: 1 Ah = 3,600 C
Milliampere-hour (mAh)
One-thousandth of an ampere-hour.
Common Uses: Small battery capacity
Conversion: 1 mAh = 3.6 C
Common Electrical Charge Conversions
| Example | Electrical Charge |
|---|---|
| Smartphone battery | 4,000 mAh = 4 Ah = 14,400 C |
| Car battery (lead-acid) | 50 Ah = 180,000 C |
| AA alkaline battery | 2,500 mAh = 2.5 Ah = 9,000 C |
| Laptop battery | 50,000 mAh = 50 Ah = 180,000 C (typical) |
Conversion Formulas
- Charge = Current × Time (Q = I × t)
- Coulombs to Ampere-hours: Ah = C ÷ 3,600
- Ampere-hours to Coulombs: C = Ah × 3,600
- mAh to Coulombs: C = mAh × 3.6
- mAh to Ah: Ah = mAh ÷ 1,000
Practical Examples
Charging a 4,000 mAh phone at 2 A: takes ~2 hours
EV battery (60 kWh at 400 V): ~540,000 C of charge
Lightning bolt: approximately 5 coulombs of charge in 0.2 seconds
Human defibrillator shock: ~360 joules at ~5,000 V = ~0.07 C
