What is Luminous Flux Converter?
Luminous flux is the total amount of visible light emitted by a source per second, weighted by the human eye's colour sensitivity. Unlike luminous intensity (directional), flux measures total light output in all directions. Lumens are the key metric on modern light bulb packaging.
Understanding the Units
Lumen (lm)
The SI derived unit of luminous flux. One lumen is the flux emitted in one steradian by a 1 candela source.
Common Uses: Light bulb output, projector brightness, flashlight ratings
Kilolumen (klm)
One thousand lumens — used for high-output lighting.
Common Uses: Stadium lighting, industrial fixtures, high-output LEDs
Conversion: 1 klm = 1,000 lm
Common Conversions
- Candle flame: ~12–14 lumens
- 40 W incandescent bulb: ~450 lumens
- 60 W incandescent bulb: ~800 lumens
- 100 W incandescent bulb: ~1,600 lumens
- LED equivalent to 60 W: 800 lumens at 8–10 W
Conversion Formulas
- Luminous flux from intensity: Φ = I × Ω (intensity × solid angle in steradians)
- Full sphere = 4π steradians ≈ 12.57 sr
- Efficacy (efficiency): lm/W = lumens ÷ watts consumed
- Illuminance: lux = lumens ÷ area (m²)
Practical Examples
Reading light: 400–800 lm recommended for comfortable reading
Living room general lighting: 1,500–3,000 lm total
Outdoor security floodlight: 700–1,300 lm
Home cinema projector: 2,000–3,000 ANSI lumens for a bright image
