What is Luminous Intensity Converter?
Luminous intensity measures the power of a light source in a specific direction, weighted by the human eye's sensitivity to wavelength. It is one of the seven SI base units. A candle flame emits approximately 1 candela, hence the unit name.
Understanding the Units
Candela (cd)
The SI base unit of luminous intensity. Defined by the luminous efficacy of monochromatic radiation at 540 THz.
Common Uses: All modern lighting specifications, LED brightness ratings, headlight standards
Candlepower (cp)
An older unit of luminous intensity, approximately equal to one candela. Now largely replaced by the candela.
Common Uses: Historical lighting documentation, some flashlight ratings
Conversion: 1 cp ≈ 0.981 cd

Conversion Formulas
- Luminous flux = Intensity × Solid angle (Φ = I × Ω)
- Illuminance = Intensity ÷ Distance² (E = I/d²) — inverse square law
- Candela to candlepower: cp = cd × 1.0197
- Candlepower to candela: cd = cp × 0.981
Practical Examples
Standard candle provides ~1 cd — origin of the candela unit
Bicycle headlight: 100–1,000 cd for safe road illumination
Search-and-rescue spotlight: 100,000–500,000 cd
At 1 m distance, a 1 cd source produces 1 lux of illuminance
