Luminance Converter

Convert luminance between candela/m², foot-lambert, nit, and other luminance units.

Convert Units

Convert luminance measurements between different units including candela per square meter, foot-lambert, nit, stilb, and more.

What is Luminance Converter?

Luminance is the intensity of light emitted from a surface per unit area in a given direction.

Understanding the Units

Candela per Square Meter (cd/m²)

SI unit of luminance. Also called nit.

Common Uses: Display brightness, lighting

Nit

Same as cd/m². Common in display specifications.

Common Uses: TV and monitor brightness

Foot-lambert (fL)

Imperial unit of luminance.

Common Uses: Cinema projection

Conversion: 1 fL = 3.426 cd/m²

Common Conversions

  • Smartphone screen: 400–600 nits (cd/m²)
  • Standard computer monitor: 250–350 nits
  • HDR TV peak brightness: 1,000–10,000 nits
  • Cinema projection screen: ~48 nits = 14 foot-lamberts

Conversion Formulas

  • Luminance = Luminous Intensity ÷ Projected Area (L = I/A)
  • cd/m² to foot-lambert: fL = cd/m² ÷ 3.426
  • Foot-lambert to cd/m²: cd/m² = fL × 3.426
  • cd/m² and nit are identical units (1 nit = 1 cd/m²)

Practical Examples

Reading under direct sunlight: ~120,000 cd/m² surface luminance

Standard office monitor at max brightness: 300–400 nits

Smartphone outdoor mode: 800–2,000 nits for sunlight readability

Movie projector (IMAX): 14 foot-lamberts = ~48 nits (industry standard)

When to Use Each Unit

cd/m² (Nits): Display and monitor brightness specs, TV and phone ratings
Foot-lamberts (fL): Cinema projection standards, especially in the US
