What is Inductance Converter?
Inductance is a coil's property to oppose changes in current by storing energy in a magnetic field. When current changes, the inductor generates a voltage resisting that change (Lenz's Law). Inductors are used in power supplies, radio filters, and transformers.
Understanding the Units
Henry (H)
The SI derived unit of inductance. A one-henry inductor generates 1 V when current changes at 1 A/s.
Common Uses: Power transformers, large chokes, laboratory equipment
Millihenry (mH)
One-thousandth of a henry.
Common Uses: Audio crossover filters, switching power supply chokes
Conversion: 1 H = 1,000 mH
Microhenry (µH)
One-millionth of a henry.
Common Uses: RF circuits, DC-DC converters, EMI filters
Conversion: 1 mH = 1,000 µH
Common Conversions
- Small RF inductor: 1–100 µH
- Audio crossover inductor: 1–10 mH
- Switching power supply choke: 10 µH to 10 mH
- Mains transformer primary: 1–10 H
Conversion Formulas
- Induced voltage: V = L × (dI/dt) — voltage proportional to rate of current change
- Energy stored: E = ½ × L × I²
- Resonant frequency: f = 1 ÷ (2π × √(L × C))
- H to mH: mH = H × 1,000
- mH to µH: µH = mH × 1,000
