Transparency Is the Part People Get Wrong

Rounding an image means masking its corners away, and that only survives in a format with an alpha channel. Export a circular crop as JPG and the corners come back as solid white or black, because JPEG has no way to record "nothing here" — which is why a circle-cropped avatar so often arrives with visible square edges. This tool defaults to PNG for exactly that reason. If you do pick JPG, the corners are filled with your chosen background colour rather than left to chance.
