Tracing a Composite, Not Converting Shape Layers
Worth setting expectations precisely: Photoshop shape layers and vector masks are real vector data, but this conversion does not read them. It reads the flattened composite and traces the resulting pixels into new paths. For a flat logo or a piece of clean artwork the result is genuinely usable and scales cleanly. For a photographic PSD it is not — tracing a photograph produces thousands of overlapping blobs. If your PSD has live shape layers and you need those exact paths, exporting from Photoshop or Illustrator is the only way to keep them.
