What an AI File Actually Is
Modern .ai files are PDF documents with an Illustrator-specific header, which is why Illustrator can open a PDF and most PDF readers can open an .ai. This conversion produces exactly that: your PSD composite wrapped into a PDF-based AI container that Illustrator opens directly. Be clear on the limit — the artwork inside is raster, not editable vector paths. You get a file Illustrator can place, crop and build around, not one whose curves you can pull.
