AVIF Keeps the Alpha Channel PNG Gave You
The usual reason to stay on PNG is transparency, and AVIF removes that reason: it carries a full 8-bit alpha channel, so a logo or UI asset keeps its soft edges. The size difference is larger here than for photographs, because PNG is lossless and pays full price for every pixel. A screenshot or an illustration with flat colour regularly comes out 60-80% smaller. The trade is encoding time — AVIF is slow to encode and fast to decode, which is the right way round for anything served more than once.
