Same Container, Different Codec
HEIC and AVIF are closer relatives than their names suggest: both store images in the ISO base media file format, the same container MP4 uses. What differs is the codec inside. HEIC wraps HEVC, which carries patent licensing that kept it out of browsers for years, while AVIF wraps AV1, which is royalty-free and is supported everywhere. Compression efficiency is broadly comparable, so this conversion is less about making the file smaller and more about moving a photo out of a format the web never accepted and into one it did.
