Animation Without the 1987 Palette
APNG is an animated PNG: same container, same lossless compression, with the frames added on. Against GIF it fixes the two things that date the format — 256 colours becomes 16 million, and one-bit transparency becomes a full alpha channel, so animated overlays stop having jagged edges. Every current browser supports it. The catch is size: because PNG is lossless, a photographic animation can come out larger than the GIF did. For flat, illustrated or UI animation, which is most of what APNG is used for, it usually wins.
